Nine

Rhein’s hair blew back from the wind that breezed through Elandro’s window. It was a beautiful day outside and she was happy that she got to spend it with him. She looked over at him as he bobbed his head to the radio. She smiled on the inside feeling lucky to have such a good-looking man next to her. She was into him not only for his looks, but for his personality as well. She hoped the relationship would actually last, unlike her others.

As she and Elandro turned on Redd’s street, she thought about how things would play out between them. She loved Redd like a sister and didn’t wanna fight with her, but she’d always been the type to stand up for herself. Elandro seemed to understand both sides of the argument which sort of put her at ease. Had it been a one-sided matter, it would be much more difficult. As they pulled up in front of the apartment, Rhein noticed something that immediately worried her. Across the street was a battered red impala that she knew to be Derreck’s car. She immediately panicked. “Oh my God!”

“What’s wrong?” Elandro questioned.

Rhein opened her mouth, but no words formed. She was too in shock to say anything. In her mind, Derreck was bad news on any occasion.

Elandro placed his hand on her thigh. “Baby, what’s wrong with you?”

She looked at him with eyes of worry, hoping he would understand. Had she told him about the Derreck situation ahead of time, this moment may have been avoided. “I think that impala across the street belongs to Evan’s dad, Derreck. Redd told me that he showed up drunk a while ago and ended up putting his hands on her.”

He heard what she said, but he had a hard time processing the information. “Come again?”

“I’m sorry,” Rhein apologized. “She asked me not to say anything.”

“You telling me this nigga put his hands on my sister and you kept that from me?!” he shouted, as he quickly hopped out of his truck. He slammed the door and ran inside the apartment building with Rhein following behind him trying to plead her case. Once they reached her door, he could hear Redd begging Derreck to let her go. “Give me your key!” he demanded, ignoring everything Rhein was trying to say.

“El, you have to understand...”

“GIVE IT TO ME!” he fumed with a threatening look in his eyes.

Rhein quickly dug in her purse and handed him the key. He burst through the door with rage in his eyes as he saw his sister pinned against the wall. He immediately ran up on Derreck and snatched him away from Redd. He then swung his fist across Derreck’s face. He hit the floor and Elandro stood over him and continued to beat him. Within seconds, his punches started to splatter blood everywhere from Derreck’s wounded face.

“El! Stop!” Redd screamed in fear that he was gonna kill him.

Unfortunately, her screams were not enough to stop him. Elandro had tuned everybody out.
